Asian, European and American Trading Sessions
The forex market runs around the clock five days a week, but activity is distributed unevenly. By convention the day is split into three sessions named after the largest financial centres.
Forex trading session hours in UTC
The Asian session follows Tokyo and Singapore: roughly 00:00 to 09:00 UTC. The European session follows London: 08:00 to 17:00 UTC. The American session follows New York: 13:00 to 22:00 UTC. These UTC hours are stable only within a season — daylight saving shifts them relative to local time in countries that do not observe it.
How the sessions differ in character
The Asian session is usually the calmest for the majors: the main European and American releases are still ahead. The European session brings the bulk of turnover, since London remains the largest centre of currency trading. The American session adds its own stream of data and, more importantly, overlaps with Europe for its first hours. The differences concern not only amplitude but which currencies are in focus: the yen and the Australian dollar in Asia, the euro and sterling in Europe.
Why the boundaries are conventions
Sessions are not exchange opening hours: the market is over the counter and does not open on a bell. Liquidity rises and falls gradually, participants from one session keep working into the next, and a large player can execute at any hour. The London open therefore describes a period of roughly an hour during which activity builds, not a moment.
How to use this in practice
The practical value of the division is that it sets expectations. A quiet market in EUR/USD during Asian hours is normal, and demanding a trending move from it is pointless. A sharp expansion of range in European hours is normal too, and entries should be planned with wider stops. What should be tied to sessions is not signals but expectations about amplitude and execution quality.

Frequently asked questions
What time do the forex sessions open?
Roughly 00:00 UTC for Asia, 08:00 for Europe and 13:00 for America. The boundaries drift with daylight saving changes in Europe and the United States.
Which session is the most active?
The European one, and within it the overlap with America. London remains the largest centre of currency trading by turnover.
Can you trade during the Asian session?
Yes, but with different expectations: the majors usually show lower amplitude and more range-bound movement. The yen and the Australian dollar are more active then than European currencies.
