The Asian Session: Range Trading

In the majors the Asian session usually passes inside a narrow range. That is a property rather than a defect, and there is a tactic built for it — but one with hard requirements on costs, and that is where it most often fails.

Why the market tends to range

Directional movement appears when new information or large flow arrives. In Asian hours the European and American currencies have neither: those regions' calendars have not started and their main participants are not working. What remains is a comparatively small flow, enough for oscillation inside established boundaries but not for breaking them.

Which pairs suit it better

The logic is simple: a range tactic needs pairs with no native flow in those hours — European and American currencies. Pairs involving the yen and the Australian dollar are at their most active during the Asian session, because those are their home hours. AUD/JPY or USD/JPY are therefore worse candidates for range work than EUR/USD or EUR/CHF.

Where the boundaries are

The boundary is the range formed in the first hours of the session, plus the previous day's levels — high, low and the closing area. Mark them as zones rather than lines: even in a quiet session, pokes through the boundaries are routine, and marking too precisely produces constant false triggers.

Why costs decide everything

This is the tactic's main trap. The potential of a trade inside a narrow range is small by definition, while the spread in Asian hours is wider than daytime at many brokers. When the target is a couple of dozen pips and the spread has widened by several, the share of costs in the result becomes decisive. Before trading the range, calculate your broker's spread in those specific hours — it often turns out that the tactic is unviable because of conditions rather than the market.

Frequently asked questions

Which pairs suit Asian session range trading?

Pairs without native flow in those hours — European and American currencies such as EUR/USD or EUR/CHF. The yen and the Australian dollar are at their most active then.

Where should Asian range boundaries be marked?

From the range of the session's first hours and from the previous day's levels. Mark them as zones: pokes through the boundaries happen even in a quiet session.

Why is Asian range trading often unprofitable?

Because of costs. The potential of a trade inside a narrow range is small, while spreads in those hours are wider than daytime at many brokers, so their share of the result becomes decisive.
