The Best Time to Trade EUR/USD

Activity in EUR/USD is distributed extremely unevenly through the day, and this is one of the few things that can be said with confidence: both currencies trade during European and American hours, and there is no meaningful flow in them during Asian hours.

Why European hours carry this pair

An instrument is active when the participants who need it are working. The euro and the dollar are the currencies of Europe and the United States, and the bulk of commercial and institutional flow falls in their business hours. The Asian session leaves the pair in a narrow range not by tradition but because nobody urgently needs that particular exchange then.

What the session overlap adds

The period when London is still working and New York has opened combines two flows and usually produces the largest amplitude. The advantage is obvious: movement plus a tight spread. The disadvantage is less obvious — sharp moves in that window require a wider stop, and trading an active period with the same stops used in a quiet one leads to systematic stop-outs.

Why the best time depends on your style

For an intraday trader the best time is the active one: without movement there is nothing to catch. For someone holding positions for days, the hour of entry barely matters, but execution quality does — enter when the spread is tight. For range work the opposite holds: the quiet period, when boundaries are respected, is more useful. The same hour is good for one task and bad for another.

What we did not measure and why

We publish no precise hourly volatility profile here. We have no intraday data for the pair, and publishing hourly percentages derived from general reasoning would mean passing an estimate off as a measurement. What we could calculate is the distribution of daily range across weekdays, and that is published separately.

Frequently asked questions

When does EUR/USD move most?

During the overlap of the European and American sessions, when London is still open and New York has started. Both flows in the pair coincide and amplitude is usually at its highest.

Is the Asian session worth trading in EUR/USD?

For directional intraday trading, usually not: there is not enough amplitude. For working the boundaries of a narrow range it is more suitable, though the potential of such a trade is modest.

Should stop size change with the time of day?

Yes. A stop should be tied to current amplitude rather than a fixed pip count. The same stop in a quiet and an active hour represents very different odds of being taken out.
