EUR/GBP: Daily Range, Character and Trading Hours
EUR/GBP moves a median of 29 pips per day. Half of all days fall between 21 and 44 pips, and the widest day in our sample reached 133. Every figure below comes from 518 daily bars covering 2024-07-29 to 2026-07-30.
EUR/GBP character: how the pair behaves
With the dollar removed from the equation, EUR/GBP trades the difference between two neighbouring economies. Shared shocks cancel out, leaving only what genuinely separates them — which is why the pair spends long stretches going nowhere and then trends for weeks.
Measured daily range
- Median daily range: 29 pips
- Typical band (middle 80% of days): 21–44 pips
- Widest single day in sample: 133 pips
- Median close-to-close change: 13 pips; the largest 20% of days exceed 28
- Range of the pair over the whole period: 0.8229–0.8842, a span of 613 pips
The gap between the median range and the widest day is the number worth remembering. A stop sized for a typical day is not a stop sized for the tail, and the tail is where accounts are damaged.
When it trades
European hours only. Outside them there is very little flow.
Who it suits
Suits patient traders working from clear levels. The narrow range makes it unsuitable for anyone needing frequent large moves.
Sizing a position on EUR/GBP
A narrow range makes fixed-pip stops especially misleading here — twenty pips is a routine fluctuation on GBP/JPY and a significant move on this pair. Always express the stop as a fraction of this pair's own range.

Frequently asked questions
Why is EUR/GBP so quiet?
With the dollar removed, external shocks hit both currencies similarly and cancel out. Only genuine divergence between the two economies reaches the exchange rate.
What makes EUR/GBP trend?
Divergence between ECB and Bank of England policy cycles. Those periods produce sustained multi-week moves between long stretches of range-bound trading.
How do I tell whether the euro or sterling is moving?
Cross-check against GBP/USD. If sterling weakens in both, the driver is sterling; if EUR/GBP rises while GBP/USD is flat, the euro has strengthened.
