The Ichimoku Cloud: What the Five Lines Show

The Ichimoku cloud is not an indicator in the ordinary sense but a whole system of five lines that shows trend, momentum and levels at the same time. Because of that it is either used in full or not understood at all.

The Ichimoku cloud: how it is calculated

Two fast lines, Tenkan and Kijun, are computed as the midpoint of the range over a short and a medium period. Two Senkou lines form the cloud and are displaced 26 bars forward — so to the right of current price the cloud already exists while price does not. The fifth line, Chikou, is displaced backward instead and serves to check against past price.

How many signals it produces on real data

  • Rule tested: price above the Ichimoku cloud
  • State changes over the sample: 26 — about 14.6 a year
  • Share of bars in the signal state: 48.4%

Measured across 518 daily bars for each of 12 currency pairs. This measures frequency, not profitability: it shows how many decisions the tool demands of a trader. The data is public and the calculation is reproduced by a script in the repository.

How it differs from similar tools

The forward displacement is something no other indicator has. It gives a pre-drawn zone that price will reach in a month and lets you see the cloud's future boundaries. The thickness of the cloud is read as the strength of the zone: the thicker it is, the harder it is to pass.

How to apply it

The basic reading is simple: price above the cloud means upward control, below it downward, inside it uncertainty in which the system does not trade. The measurement showed price was above the cloud on 48% of days, with the state changing about fifteen times a year — meaning Ichimoku demands noticeably fewer decisions than oscillators and suits medium-term work.

Common mistakes

The first mistake is using one of the five lines, usually Tenkan, as an ordinary moving average: the point of the system is the combination, not an individual line. The second is trading inside the cloud, where the system itself says there is no direction. The third is changing the standard 9, 26 and 52 periods: they are tied to the trading weeks of the Japanese market, and fitting them to history turns the system into curve fitting.

Frequently asked questions

What do the Ichimoku cloud lines show?

Tenkan and Kijun give short and medium price balance, the two Senkou lines form the cloud as an equilibrium zone, and Chikou is displaced backward to check against past price.

Why is the cloud drawn ahead of price?

The Senkou lines are displaced 26 bars forward. That gives a zone known in advance that price will reach later — a property no other indicator has.

What does price inside the cloud mean?

The absence of direction. In that state the system gives no signals, and trading inside the cloud contradicts its logic.
