Balance and imbalance are two market states between which it constantly switches. In balance, price fluctuates in a range; in imbalance, it moves with momentum. Being able to tell these states apart helps you choose the right tactics: what works in balance is ruinous in imbalance, and vice versa. Let's break down both states and the transition between them.

What balance is

Balance is a state of equilibrium, when buyers and sellers are roughly balanced and price fluctuates in a range around an area of fair value. It's a sideways market, a consolidation: the market has 'agreed' to trade in a certain corridor, and neither side dominates. In balance, price moves from one range boundary to the other, gravitating toward the center. Balance is a phase of accumulation and equilibrium, where the market seems to rest, expressing no clear direction, while participants trade around an established value.

What imbalance is

Imbalance is a state where equilibrium is broken: one side sharply outweighs, and price moves with momentum in one direction. Buyers or sellers dominate, the order flow is one-directional, and price quickly covers distance without lingering. Imbalance is a trend, an impulsive move, a phase where the market 're-prices' fair value and rapidly shifts to a new level. Unlike balance, here there's a clear direction and force, and price doesn't fluctuate in a corridor but moves decisively one way.

The transition from balance to imbalance

The market constantly switches between the two states: balance gives way to imbalance and back. From balance (a narrowing range, a consolidation) the market breaks out into imbalance with an impulsive breakout, when one side finally gains the upper hand, this is the 'compression, expansion' logic. Then the imbalance's momentum runs out, and the market again enters balance at a new level, forming a new range. Understanding this cycle helps you anticipate: a prolonged balance prepares an imbalance (a move), and a fading imbalance transitions into balance (a sideways market).

Why telling them apart helps choose tactics

The key practical value is that different states require different tactics. In balance (a range), trading from the boundaries works: a buy at the lower boundary, a sell at the upper one, a bet on a return to the center; breakout strategies here give false signals. In imbalance (a trend), trading in the direction of the move works: an entry on pullbacks with the trend, following the momentum; attempts to trade 'from the boundaries' against the momentum are ruinous. Applying range tactics in a trend (selling a rising market) or trend tactics in a range (chasing every piercing) is a classic mistake. First you determine the market's state, then choose the tactics for it.
