Do You Actually Need a VPS for Trading?
A VPS is sold as a mandatory attribute of automated trading. In practice it solves two specific problems, and if your strategy has neither of them it is simply a monthly expense.
The two problems it solves
The first is continuity: the robot keeps running when your computer is off, restarting or has lost its connection. The second is latency: a server near the broker's venue shortens the time from signal to execution. Everything else said about VPS hosting is derived from those two or is marketing.
Who needs one and who does not
A scalper or a high-frequency system needs one for both reasons. A robot trading on the daily close is indifferent to latency, though continuity may matter if it carries positions. Someone trading manually from daily charts does not need one at all. There is one honest criterion: calculate what a missed signal from a switched-off computer would cost you and compare it with the rental price.
Proximity beats power
A typical mistake in choosing is paying for processor and memory. A trading terminal with one or two robots needs little of either. What matters is geography: the data centre's location relative to the broker's servers. The difference between a server in the same city and one on another continent is measured in tens of milliseconds, and for fast systems that outweighs any hardware specification.
What a VPS does not give you
It does not make a strategy profitable and does not protect against its errors — it only guarantees uninterrupted operation. An unprofitable system on a VPS loses money in exactly the same way, only around the clock and without gaps. Worth remembering when a VPS is offered bundled with a robot as part of a solution.
